As we near the end of April, and the warm weather has yet to prove that it’s here to stay, I find any reason to transition my wardrobe to reflect daydreams of tulips in the park, Salty Pimp ice cream cones from Big Gay (seriously, they’re the best), and long summer days spent with friends that drag into the evening.
Although the weather has not fully transitioned into Spring, and still screams waxed skinny jeans and a comfy sweater when I check my weather app in the morning, I’m sick of the monotony. It’s time to show some skin, and prep for mini shorts and crop tops (but definitely not paired together). Why not start the transition by showing off some ankle?
Culottes, traditionally conjuring up images of gentleman in the breeches, or ladies undergarments, have taken center stage. These fun and flirty pant alternative, with a “universally flattering fit” as described by Elle.com, are a versatile addition to your wardrobe. Don’t confuse culottes with capris, however, because they are definitely not the same!
Depending on who you want to be that day- sexy, street, or minimalist, pair your favorite culottes with a different shoe and you can totally transform your look. Wear a strappy ‘nudist’ shoe, to counteract the boxy silhouette and elongate your legs, or throw on a sneaker to achieve a casual and cool look worthy of Phil Oh’s lens.
With the endless possibility of shoe options, I tend to gravitate toward a standard silhouette on top to pair with my culottes. For the fashion risk-takers, tunics and culottes are a match made in heaven. Weather the tunic is long and sleek with a slit, or boxy and oversized, these shapes play well with the lines of a wider leg pant. I love a more minimalist black and white look, pairing my pinstripe culottes with a black tunic with shoulder hardware, but you can also play monochromatism or color.
